The Department of Environment for the Regency of Buleleng arranged a tree-planting and beach-cleanup day on Friday June 11 in the morning. This event was designed to work in with World Environment Day which was on June 5. Our Presiendt-Elect, Lia, suggested that it would be good for our club to get involved.
It started as a really Indonesian event with chairs set out under a marquee, speeches, then snack boxes and coffee for all the volunteers who were helping. The head of the Department of Environment, Wayan Pesat Swastika spoke for the organizing committee. He talked about the aims of World Environment Day, and gave some particulars of this activity.
For the tree-planting people went in two directions - one group planting in the shaded area by the beach in Kalibukbuk, while another group moved down to Kaliasem and planted in more open spaces. Our club had donated 100 trees - there were several hundred altogether, and we were busy ensuring that all our trees got planted along the beaches.
