Reading is essential in the development of a child, and access to information empowers people. Rotary Clubs all over the world work on literacy projects.
The Rotary Club Bandung Kembang and Rotary Club of Hilversum West (NL) organized the “100 Pondok Baca Projectâ€. The project commenced in 2006; 100 small libraries for children were set up all over Indonesia.
A year later, with the help of many people the Rotary Club of Bali Lovina was able to sell copies of “Anak dalam hatiku Anak dalam diriku†a book produced especially for this project. The “100 Pondok baca Indonesia†runs for 5 years (until the end of 2010). The library in Lovina receives a monthly donation for 2 librarians and regular donations of books. So far “The Pondok Baca Lovina†has received 800 books from the “Yayasan 100 Pondok Baca Indonesiaâ€. Together with other donations this brings the amount of books in the library at a total of 1800.
Before the establishment of “ The Pondok Baca Lovinaâ€, there was no place where children could go to read or borrow books. Now Kayuputih, Lovina, has its own “Pondok Baca library†with a nice collection of books and every afternoon between 12:30 and 17:30 children between the ages of 6 and 18 come to play, read and learn.
Children are encouraged to read. Through the reading projects and the teaching of library skills children will develop into reflective thinkers and inquirers.
When the “100 Pondok baca Indonesia†project ends at the end of 2010, the Rotary Club of Bali Lovina will review the club’s involvement. |
