Children with BannerFebruary is World understanding month on the Rotary calendar, and on the 23rd of February the world celebrates ‘World understanding and Peace day’.

RI President John Kenny states in his February message that "In this, World Understanding Month, we do well to remember -- that in all of our service, we reach for the larger goal of fellowship, understanding, and peace.'" (See the full message.)

In February Rotary Clubs all over the world reach across borders and cultures in the name of service and fellowship. The 23rd of February is also when Rotary celebrates its 105th anniversary, marking a special achievement toward the building of peace and goodwill around the world.

The Rotary Club of Bali Lovina helped organizing a project in the “Window to the World school ” as well as the “Pondok Baca children” library in Lovina, focused on increasing people’s awareness of different cultures. The project started on the 23rd of February and will finish in June 2010.

The project carries the working title “Around the World is 60 days”, with a wink to the famous book of Jules Verne.

On ‘World Understanding and Peace day 2010’ the ‘around the world in 60 days project’ took of with an opening ceremony in the morning for the kindergarten children and parents , and another ceremony in the afternoon for the children joining the courses in the library.

On their trip around the world the children will visit 5 countries; The Netherlands, South Africa, Brazil, Canada and finally Australia.

They will travel by plane, boat, bus and even bicycle. They will have friends showing them around and stay in daily contact with their friends in Lovina through e-mail, letters, telephone calls and even “Skype’’.

Two special programs for this project were made by IPP Conchita in cooperation with 2 student teachers from The Netherlands, Kim and Marjolein. Both women will later in this academic year talk about their experiences with the project as guest speakers for the club.

For the kindergarten the two school teddy’s Dino and Dini will be the ones making the trip.

For the library the children will have a ‘special friend’ in every country to show them around.

The program will consist of lots of visual experiences, dancing and music, and many different activities that will give the children an idea of day to day live in the countries they are visiting.

A donation for the library for the project came unexpectedly from President Robbie and his wife Rtn. Lia.

Robbie and Lia’s Golden Retriever Pluto had 6 beautiful puppies. Lia and Robbie just wanted to find a good house for the puppies. Instead of selling the puppies they asked people to make a donation to the RCBL. The money from the puppies went to the “Around the World in 60 days program”.
