As we are all too well aware HIV-AIDS is a worldwide epidemic. It featured in the media several years ago now its limelight is somewhat diminished. However it is still here; lurking in corners, bubbling away in the background destined never to go away until a cure is found; sadly it is a growing epidemic here in Indonesia.
The red ribbon (left) is an international symbol for HIV-AIDS awareness - see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Red_ribbon - and the message on Ginny's T-shirt (right) means something like No-one is immune to AIDS.
HIV-AIDS is no stranger to Bali and the number of reported cases is on the increase with the north of Bali having the second highest number of cases after Denpasar in the south. The Rotary Club of Bali Lovina has determined to promote and fundraise for HIV-AIDS awareness programs as one of our ongoing community projects.
It is difficult to obtain accurate data to verify the number of people on Bali that are currently infected with the HIV-AIDS virus; recent reports from the Aids Commission state (as of March 2010) that there were 3,390 - so that is around 1 person in every 1,000. These numbers are increasing at an alarming rate and cover the sexually transmitted cases and the Injecting Drug Users (IDU) sector which is the second largest group of people living with this infection.
But what about the cases that go undiagnosed? Autopsies are not carried out routinely and because the majority of the patients come from poor social economical backgrounds, the figures in fact could be much greater. The Rotary Club of Bali Lovina is committed to raising money to ensure that these crucial educational programs continue.

Children are bearing the brunt of an HIV-AIDS epidemic on the holiday isle
ON a flawless day in Bali, tourists are revelling in sun and surf and padding about plush hotels. Beneath the highly developed tourism industry a deepening health crisis is gripping the island.
Encapsulating the trend is a tiny Balinese girl whose unfocused gaze indicates her poor state of health. Asih, two, is pale and listless as she wanders about her home of the past year, Anak Anak Bali orphanage, or Bali Kids, in Kerobokan. Asih is having trouble fighting off a common cold. She is HIV positive and has tuberculosis, preventing her immune system from kicking in quickly.

To the left we have Rotary President Robbie with Planet and Suki from Yaysan Citra Usadha - an Indonesian foundation working with HIV-AIDS awareness. On the right we have Sisca and Kade. These were taken at an HIV-AIDS function held on Lovina Beach on Saturday November 21, 2009. Members of War'gas (a support group for gays and transexuals in Singaraja) were also in attendance. Despite the wet weather and a change of venue to an under-cover area near the beach, this was a successful evening with the local community and curious tourists in attendance.
Music and entertainment with a mime story about AIDS concluded the evening’s entertainment which was partially sponsored by the Rotary Club of Bali Lovina.

Participation in the annual Independence Day parade in Singaraja (held every August) is a good way to spread the word. Brochures depicting information about HIV-AIDS are handed out, with counselors from the Yayasan always on hand to talk to spectators and answer their questions about HIV-AIDS.
Yayasan Citra Usadha organised the presence in the parade with help from other groups in the south and members of our club supported them. |

A projector for Yayasan Citra Usadha - an organzation for AIDS/HIV awareness, Lovina, North Bali
On March 24, President Conchita and Secretary Ginny went to meet with the Suki from the Yayasan Citra Usadha in Lovina.
Yayasan Citra Usadha received five and a half million rupiahs, raised during the club Christmas Fundraiser in December. Yayasan Citra Usadha is going to purchase a projector which will be utilized in their ongoing AIDS/HIV awareness campaigns throughout the schools in Buleleng.
On the left, Ginny and Conchita are presenting the money to Suki at the Yayasan office in Lovina, and on the right is a photo taken later (July 2009) showing the projector in use at a school. |
