Handy Saputra is the Vice President of the Rotary Club of Bali Seminyak. After hearing a number of comments during the have had bringing Rotary Goods (Anti-Malaria Mosquito Nets) or Donations (Wheelchairs) into Indonesia, he shared the following:
First of all, if an individual (group) wants to import some ITEMS into Indonesia, he/she/they must become familiar with the CORRECT procedures and types of documents that are required by Indonesian law.
The slides used by Handy are here. The last slide has contact details.
The law provides for permanent imports which are goods to be used or consumed in Indonesia, and temporary import which are goods that will be re-exported after a short period like 3 months. An example of temporary imports would be cameras and equipment brought in by a film production company, then sent on to the next location in another country after the filming.
If a member is planning on having some items (social purpose) shipped to Indonesia, he/she should ABSOLUTELY first check with the Customs' Office to determine IF these items are allowed to be imported into the country. Used Clothing/Equipment etc., for example, are VERY difficult to get in. After the Customs gives the GREEN light on the items, then the VALUE and type of DOCUMENTATION required has to be discussed and agreed upon. ONLY after this process has been completed - can the Club member determined if it's worth shipping the items to Indonesia. Please note, there are items that can be brought in - DUTY FREE.
