Willemijn van Gardingen 2Yayasan Wahyu and the school for deaf children in Singaraja

Willemijn van Gardingen is originally from The Netherlands. Willemijn and her husband Frans have been coming to Bali for ten years. They noticed the needs of underprivileged people in the East Singaraja area. They founded a foundation in The Netherlands, called ‘Stichting Wahyu’. (Foundation Wahyu). Wahyu means ‘an intermediator sent by God’. ‘Stichting Wahyu’ aims at helping underprivileged children in North Bali.

Willemijn van Gardingen 1The first big project the Foundation undertook was the restoration of a school in Bondalem. The last year the Foundation has been focusing mainly on helping the school for deaf/mute children in Singaraja. This institute is struggling to get enough money to keep it going. Many children who join the institution come from outside Singaraja and have to live at the institute premises. However insufficient funding makes the place a difficult place to stay.

There is also good news. The school part of the institution is improving it’s programs. Today, Willemijn talked about the School for deaf/mute children in Singaraja. The developments that have been made, the programs they run, and the challenges that are still ahead.
